Title Hunsbury Hill Country Park
Image
Description
An Iron Age Hill Fort sits at the centre of this country park, alongside a nature reserve, picnic areas and a cafe. This important archaeological site dates to between the 7th and 4th centuries BC. The internal rampart appears to have been burnt down and vitrified and such forts are rare in England. The fort is a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument. A successful Heritage Lottery bid submitted by the Friends of West Hunsbury Parks means that efforts have now started to preserve this important part of Northampton’s heritage. Hunsbury Hill Ironstone Railway Museum can also be found within the park, giving an overview of ironstone quarrying in the Hunsbury area, complete with a 1.5 mile heritage railway line, that runs through the surrounding country park.
